8 Series G14/G15/G16: history, design and engineering
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected cabriolet fits into the family.
The modern 8 Series returned with three regular bodies: G15 coupe in 2018, G14 soft-top convertible soon after, and the longer G16 four-door Gran Coupe in 2019. Coupe and convertible share a 2,822 mm wheelbase, while G16 extends it to 3,023 mm and therefore needs separate rear-cabin, dimension and production data.
The regular range centred on 840i, 840d xDrive and M850i xDrive derivatives with pronounced regional variation. F91/F92/F93 M8 models and the Alpina B8 are related but separately scoped high-performance products; their S63 engines, chassis specification and production boundaries must not be merged into the standard G14/G15/G16 matrix.
BMW updated all three bodies for 2022 with exterior, display and equipment changes. English Wikipedia records regular 8 Series production ending at the end of April 2026; BMW's April 2026 Dingolfing plant profile no longer lists 8 Series among daily current output, but no dedicated factory last-car release was found, so the exact end date remains an explicitly secondary boundary.

How the generation evolved
The important launches, additions and updates did not always happen at the same time for every body or market.
G15 coupe revealed
BMW reintroduced the 8 Series name with its new flagship fixed-roof grand tourer.
G14 convertible
The second body added a powered fabric roof and its own reinforcement and luggage package.
G16 Gran Coupe
The four-door body entered the range with a 201 mm longer wheelbase than coupe and convertible.
Three-body update
BMW revised the coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe together for the middle of the lifecycle.
Reported production end
Secondary reporting dates the end of regular production to late April; the exact factory last-car date still lacks a dedicated BMW release.

Cabriolet

Coupe
G158 Series G15 is a distinct G14/G15/G16 body branch. A lower-roof two-door body with longer doors and a more overtly sporting brief than the corresponding sedan. Engines/drive: B58 petrol I6, N63 petrol V8, B57 diesel I6.
Gran Coupe
G168 Series G16 is a distinct G14/G15/G16 body branch. A four-door fastback combining a coupe-like roofline with easier rear access and a large tailgate or sedan-style luggage opening. Engines/drive: B58 petrol I6, N63 petrol V8, B57 diesel I6.
