B48 serves the core four-cylinder range and B58 the M340i. Output, 48-volt system and emissions hardware changed by market and update stage.
2018–

3 Series → G20/G21/G28 → Sedan
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.
G20 returned the 3 Series to a sharper, more driver-focused brief while adding the digital cockpit and assistance systems expected of a modern executive car. Introduced in 2018, it uses BMW's modular CLAR architecture and keeps the familiar longitudinal layout, with rear-wheel drive at the centre of the range and xDrive on selected versions.
The family is deliberately narrower than earlier generations. G20 is the global Sedan, G21 is the Touring and G28 is the longer-wheelbase sedan developed for China; Coupe and Cabriolet remain in the 4 Series. Regular petrol and diesel models, plug-in hybrids and the Chinese electric G28 derivative therefore coexist without becoming one universal market range.
G20 Sedan, G21 Touring and long-wheelbase G28 serve different body and market roles. The China-only electric i3 eDrive35L/eDrive40L is a G28 derivative rather than the successor to the earlier global I01 i3, while M3 G80/G81 remains a separate BMW M family. Pre-LCI, 2022-update and later powertrain revisions therefore need dated regional rows.
Dimensions can change with body, market and model year, so this page keeps them tied to the exact factory branch.
| Body | Code | Production | Doors / seats | Length | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan | G20 | 2018– | 4-door sedan · 5 seats / 5 | 4,709–4,713 mm | ≈ 480 L |
| Touring | G21 | 2019– | 5-door wagon · 5 seats / 5 | 4,709–4,713 mm | 500–1,510 L |
| Long-wheelbase Sedan | G28 | 2019– | 4-door long-wheelbase sedan · 5 seats / 5 | 4,829 mm | ≈ 480 L |
The generation could span very different engines and drivetrains. The table keeps output, gearbox, market and production period together.
Documented sedan applications; output and availability remain market- and model-year-specific.

B48 serves the core four-cylinder range and B58 the M340i. Output, 48-volt system and emissions hardware changed by market and update stage.
B47 and B57 combine DPF, EGR, SCR and, on selected versions, a 48-volt starter-generator. Diagnostics include pressure, temperature and regeneration history.
320e/330e combine B48, a transmission-integrated motor and a high-voltage battery. Capacity, electric range and charging hardware changed substantially in 2024.
China-market i3 eDrive35L/eDrive40L use the G28 body basis but are separate electric derivatives with different structures and service requirements.
Gearboxes, driven wheels and final-drive hardware changed with engine, market and production date.
The base longitudinal layout retains classic balance; exact final drive and half-shafts follow the powertrain.
Electronically controlled all-wheel drive is available widely. Tyre size, model and wear should be matched across axles.
The automatic is effectively universal; hybrid variants integrate the electric motor and require their own service and safety procedure.
Suspension, brakes, safety systems and electronics evolved across the range, even when cars shared the same basic architecture.
The important launches, additions and updates did not always happen at the same time for every body or market.
Sedan is revealed in autumn 2018 and global market launch begins in March 2019.
Touring production begins in June while BMW Brilliance launches the long-wheelbase China-market sedan.
The 48-volt petrol/diesel range and 320e/330e PHEVs expand, including Touring derivatives.
Exterior and cabin are revised with BMW Curved Display and a newer digital interface architecture.
Chassis, interfaces and plug-in hybrids are revised with a new battery and longer electric range.
Performance models, option packages and regional editions may look related, but their engineering and production identity can be very different.
BMW Brilliance China-market long-wheelbase sedan with its own range, cabin and update path.
PHEV derivatives with build-date-specific luggage, mass, battery and charging figures.
Electric China-market derivative of the long-wheelbase body; unrelated to the earlier I01 BMW i3 hatchback.
Cabin technology and standard equipment changed by country and year; a build sheet remains the best guide to one individual car.

| Item | Interval / trigger | Catalog note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | CBS-based and duty-cycle adjusted | Approval depends on engine, region and GPF/DPF fitment. |
| Brake fluid | every 2 years | PHEV regeneration does not replace disc inspection and free caliper movement. |
| Software and campaigns | check at each scheduled visit | Apply updates only when VIN-compatible and with stable power support. |
| PHEV system | CBS and exact-battery manual | Inspect charging, isolation, cooling and high-voltage health report. |
The badge and registration year tell only part of the story; production date, body code, engine and factory options complete it.
The story is mapped through English Wikipedia and its bibliography, then important dates and technical claims are checked against BMW material.
