3 Series G20/G21/G28: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.

G20 returned the 3 Series to a sharper, more driver-focused brief while adding the digital cockpit and assistance systems expected of a modern executive car. Introduced in 2018, it uses BMW's modular CLAR architecture and keeps the familiar longitudinal layout, with rear-wheel drive at the centre of the range and xDrive on selected versions.

The family is deliberately narrower than earlier generations. G20 is the global Sedan, G21 is the Touring and G28 is the longer-wheelbase sedan developed for China; Coupe and Cabriolet remain in the 4 Series. Regular petrol and diesel models, plug-in hybrids and the Chinese electric G28 derivative therefore coexist without becoming one universal market range.

G20 Sedan, G21 Touring and long-wheelbase G28 serve different body and market roles. The China-only electric i3 eDrive35L/eDrive40L is a G28 derivative rather than the successor to the earlier global I01 i3, while M3 G80/G81 remains a separate BMW M family. Pre-LCI, 2022-update and later powertrain revisions therefore need dated regional rows.

Engines and powertrains

The generation could span very different engines and drivetrains. The table keeps output, gearbox, market and production period together.

Petrol

B48 serves the core four-cylinder range and B58 the M340i. Output, 48-volt system and emissions hardware changed by market and update stage.

Diesels

B47 and B57 combine DPF, EGR, SCR and, on selected versions, a 48-volt starter-generator. Diagnostics include pressure, temperature and regeneration history.

Plug-in hybrids

320e/330e combine B48, a transmission-integrated motor and a high-voltage battery. Capacity, electric range and charging hardware changed substantially in 2024.

Electric G28

China-market i3 eDrive35L/eDrive40L use the G28 body basis but are separate electric derivatives with different structures and service requirements.

04 / Driveline

How power reaches the road

Gearboxes, driven wheels and final-drive hardware changed with engine, market and production date.

Rear-wheel drive

The base longitudinal layout retains classic balance; exact final drive and half-shafts follow the powertrain.

xDrive

Electronically controlled all-wheel drive is available widely. Tyre size, model and wear should be matched across axles.

Eight-speed Steptronic

The automatic is effectively universal; hybrid variants integrate the electric motor and require their own service and safety procedure.

05 / Engineering

What changed underneath

Suspension, brakes, safety systems and electronics evolved across the range, even when cars shared the same basic architecture.

Body and chassis

  • CLAR architecture and increased body rigidity
  • Front struts and five-link rear suspension
  • Passive, M Sport or adaptive chassis depending on derivative

Digital architecture

  • Early iDrive 7 with separate displays
  • BMW Curved Display and newer OS versions after LCI
  • Remote upgrades only where market and option specification support them

Body differences

  • G21 separately opening rear glass
  • G28 wheelbase 110 mm longer than G20
  • PHEV-specific luggage and high-voltage packaging
06 / Timeline

How the generation evolved

The important launches, additions and updates did not always happen at the same time for every body or market.

  1. G20

Sedan is revealed in autumn 2018 and global market launch begins in March 2019.

  2. G21 and G28

Touring production begins in June while BMW Brilliance launches the long-wheelbase China-market sedan.

  3. Electrification

The 48-volt petrol/diesel range and 320e/330e PHEVs expand, including Touring derivatives.

  4. LCI

Exterior and cabin are revised with BMW Curved Display and a newer digital interface architecture.

  5. Technical update

Chassis, interfaces and plug-in hybrids are revised with a new battery and longer electric range.

07 / Special derivatives

The versions that stood apart

Performance models, option packages and regional editions may look related, but their engineering and production identity can be very different.

08 / Equipment

Inside the car

Cabin technology and standard equipment changed by country and year; a build sheet remains the best guide to one individual car.

Interface

  • iDrive 7 on early cars
  • Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8/8.5 by date and market
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and remote services depend on region and subscriptions

Assistance

  • Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional
  • Parking Assistant, surround cameras and reversing functions
  • Actual capability follows installed hardware and option codes

Chassis and comfort

  • Standard, M Sport and adaptive suspension
  • Laser/adaptive LED where offered by phase and market
  • G28-specific rear-seat-oriented options

10 / Identification

How to identify the exact car

The badge and registration year tell only part of the story; production date, body code, engine and factory options complete it.

Body code
G20 is the standard sedan, G21 Touring and G28 long-wheelbase sedan; G28 i3 must be separately marked as BEV.
Build date
Separates pre-LCI, the 2022 LCI and the 2024 technical update.
Option codes
Resolve actual assistance, display, lighting, suspension and connectivity functions.
Market
Powertrains, emissions hardware, telematics and online-service availability vary regionally.
