8 Series E31: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected coupe fits into the family.

E31 was BMW's new technology-led flagship coupe, presented at the 1989 Frankfurt motor show and produced from May 1989 to May 1999. Although its production overlapped the end of E24, BMW positioned it higher and did not treat it as a simple direct 6 Series replacement.

The series-production tree contains one pillarless coupe body. It launched with V12 power, later added 840Ci V8 derivatives and culminated in the 850CSi with extensive BMW Motorsport development; engine family, transmission and steering-system details differ sharply among these branches.

BMW built convertible and M8 prototypes, but neither became a regular series-production body. They belong in prototype history and image galleries, not as selectable production-body routes or ordinary modification rows.

    BMW Group Archive dates the start of E31 series production to May 1989.

  2. Frankfurt premiere

    The V12 850i introduced the new flagship coupe to the public at the IAA.

  3. 850CSi

    The Motorsport-developed flagship added the S70-family V12 and substantial chassis changes.

  4. 840Ci V8 branch

    V8 power broadened the range below the V12 derivatives.

  5. Production ends

    The sole series-production E31 coupe line ended after a ten-year factory period.
