B3 / D3 E36: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.

E36 established B3 as a regular multi-body ALPINA range, first with the B3 3.0 and later B3 3.2. Both used BMW 325i/328i foundations with ALPINA engine, transmission, chassis, aerodynamics and interior work rather than the M3's S50 route.

Two-door, four-door, Touring and Cabriolet cars were produced, but the archive lists different acceleration, consumption and production windows by body. B6 2.8/3.2 models are related period products and should remain searchable without being relabelled as B3.

The E36 M3 and ALPINA B3 pursue different performance concepts and must not share engine or suspension data. Japanese-market imports, Switch-Tronic equipment and later conversions also require individual evidence.
