M3 E36: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected coupe fits into the family.

E36 transformed M3 from a homologation special into a broader high-performance road range. It introduced a naturally aspirated inline-six, first as the 3.0-litre S50 and later as the 3.2-litre Evolution, while adding sedan and convertible bodies to the coupé.

Europe received the S50 engines and, with the 3.2, a six-speed manual plus more advanced VANOS. North American cars used different S50US/S52 engines, outputs, gearboxes and edition structures; a single global power figure is therefore materially wrong.

Body production dates and special models overlap unevenly. GT, GT2/Imola Individual, Lightweight and regional edition names need separate market evidence, while the one-off M3 Compact prototype is historical context rather than a production body style.
