M5 G90/G99: history, design and engineering

G90/G99 is the first plug-in-hybrid M5 generation. Its M HYBRID system combines the S68 V8 with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, a high-voltage battery and M xDrive; system output must not be confused with the combustion engine's standalone rating.

G90 Sedan and G99 Touring launched together as one technical family but have distinct bodies, mass, luggage volume and market availability. Electric range, charging time and consumption depend on homologation cycle and usable battery definition and must be labelled by market.

The substantial mass increase is part of the generation's engineering context, not a transcription error. Performance, battery state and test method are related, so acceleration and consumption claims require their factory test conditions rather than comparison as naked numbers with F90.
