X M / XM G09: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sports activity vehicle fits into the family.

G09 XM is the first standalone BMW M model since M1 and the division's first production plug-in hybrid. It combines an eight-speed transmission-integrated electric motor, high-voltage battery and M xDrive with either a V8 or, for XM 50e in selected markets, an inline-six; these are fundamentally different powertrain branches.

The original V8 XM was followed by the higher-output XM Label Red, later named XM Label, plus the six-cylinder XM 50e. BMW revised the 2025 range so the Label became the only V8 derivative and charging capability/equipment changed; launch, Label Red, Label and 50e require separate dates and markets.

System output, combustion output and electric-motor output are different fields, while WLTP electric range and consumption depend on wheels, usable battery and test state. The limited 500-car Label Red edition is an equipment subset of the mechanical Label Red specification, not a fourth powertrain.

    BMW announced the V8 M HYBRID SAV and its Spartanburg production plan.
