M5 E34: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.

E34 developed M5 into a more mature sedan and, from 1992, the first M5 Touring. Early cars used the 3.6-litre S38B36; the later 3.8-litre S38B38 brought more power and accompanying chassis changes, while North America retained a distinct 3.6-litre market programme.

Sedan and Touring have different production windows and totals. The Touring was left-hand drive only and extremely low volume; late six-speed cars, Nürburgring package equipment and market editions must be attached to build date and region.

E34s were largely hand-finished by BMW M, but factory and assembly details changed through the cycle. The one-off convertible prototype is documented history, not a production body and must not create a public catalog route.
