M1 E26: history, design and engineering

E26 M1 was BMW Motorsport GmbH's first independently developed road car: a low-volume, mid-engined homologation project styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and built through a multi-company Italian/German production chain. Delays and a changing racing rulebook transformed it from a planned competition basis into a road-car icon with its own Procar championship.

The road car used the naturally aspirated M88/1 inline-six behind the cabin and a five-speed manual transaxle. Group 4, Group 5 and Procar machines were competition cars with fundamentally different outputs and equipment; their figures must never be shown as road-car specifications.

Production totals differ depending on whether prototypes and race cars are counted. The catalog should keep production type, chassis identity and source definition alongside every number, while separating the standard road car from later one-off restorations and modern concepts carrying the M1 name.
