M3 G80/G81: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.

G80/G81 is the sixth M3 generation and the first to include a series-production Touring. The S58 inline-six appeared in manual rear-drive, Competition automatic and later M xDrive configurations; the G81 Touring launched only as an automatic all-wheel-drive Competition model.

The family has evolved through model updates and limited derivatives including CS and Touring CS. Sedan and Touring differ in body, luggage, mass and production location, while rear-drive and M xDrive cars require distinct drivetrain and performance records even where their badges share Competition wording.

Output, infotainment and exterior details changed by production phase, and not every derivative is sold in every country. Figures for M3, M4 and M2 using S58 cannot be copied between chassis because engine calibration, gearing, mass and homologation differ.
