2 Series F44: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected gran coupe fits into the family.

F44 introduced the 2 Series Gran Coupe as a compact four-door with frameless side windows and a conventional separate luggage compartment. Despite the 2 Series badge, its transverse front-/all-wheel-drive architecture is related to F40 1 Series, not the longitudinal F22 coupe.

The model was revealed in October 2019, shown publicly in Los Angeles and launched in the first markets in March 2020. The launch range combined three- and four-cylinder engines with front-wheel drive or xDrive depending on derivative; gearbox choice likewise followed the exact engine and market.

M235i xDrive is the M Performance flagship within F44. It is not related to F87 M2 body engineering, and the shared ‘235’ portion of the badge does not imply the same cylinder count, engine family or driven-wheel layout as the earlier F22 M235i.
