2 Series → F74 → Gran Coupe
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected gran coupe fits into the family.
F74 is the second 2 Series Gran Coupe generation for global markets. It remains a transverse four-door compact with front-wheel drive or xDrive, but BMW documents revised dimensions, a new engine portfolio, extensively reworked suspension and an OS 9-based digital cockpit.
BMW revealed the model in October 2024, started Leipzig production in November and scheduled the global sales launch for March 2025. Launch derivatives and their outputs are market-specific; the European M235 xDrive figure cannot be assumed for every region.
China receives the related long-wheelbase F78 Gran Coupe L. Because its wheelbase, length, production location and market range differ, the catalogue publishes F78 as a separate body route rather than an alias attached to the standard F74 dimensions.
Dimensions can change with body, market and model year, so this page keeps them tied to the exact factory branch.
| Body | Code | Production | Doors / seats | Length | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gran Coupe | F74 | 2024–present | 4-door fastback / 5 | 4,546 mm | 360–430 L |
| Gran Coupe | F78 | 2024–present | 4-door fastback / 5 | 4,663 mm | 430 L |
The generation could span very different engines and drivetrains. The table keeps output, gearbox, market and production period together.
Documented gran coupe applications; output and availability remain market- and model-year-specific.

Inline and V engines are grouped by engine family, displacement, induction system and emissions specification.
Where diesels were offered, output, injection generation and emissions hardware are recorded market by market.
Mild- and plug-in hybrids are separate derivatives; combustion-engine output must not be substituted for total system output.
Gearboxes, driven wheels and final-drive hardware changed with engine, market and production date.
Gearbox type and unit code follow engine, market and production date. Gear count alone does not identify the transmission.
Catalog architecture: longitudinal layout · rear- or all-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive availability and hardware remain derivative-specific.
Ratio, differential type and electronic control belong to the exact derivative and can differ on performance models.
Suspension, brakes, safety systems and electronics evolved across the range, even when cars shared the same basic architecture.
The important launches, additions and updates did not always happen at the same time for every body or market.
BMW published the F74 press kit with revised chassis, drivetrains and OS 9.
Series production began at Plant Leipzig.
The initial petrol, diesel and M Performance range entered the market.
Standard- and long-wheelbase derivatives are tracked as different body and market records.
Performance models, option packages and regional editions may look related, but their engineering and production identity can be very different.
2 Series F74 is a distinct F74 body branch. A four-door fastback combining a coupe-like roofline with easier rear access and a large tailgate or sedan-style luggage opening. Engines/drive: B38/B48 petrol, B47 diesel, 48-volt mild hybrid.
2 Series F78 is a distinct F74 body branch. A four-door fastback combining a coupe-like roofline with easier rear access and a large tailgate or sedan-style luggage opening. Engines/drive: B48A20 petrol.
Cabin technology and standard equipment changed by country and year; a build sheet remains the best guide to one individual car.
A practical starting point for inspecting and maintaining a car from this generation — not a diagnosis of an individual example.
| Item | Interval / trigger | Catalog note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | CBS/factory schedule; time and mileage for historic cars | Oil approval follows the exact engine and market. |
| Brake fluid | Time-based factory schedule | ABS/DSC-compatible bleeding procedure is required after hydraulic work. |
| Coolant | Factory schedule and condition | Fluid specification and bleeding method are generation-specific. |
| Transmission & final drives | Unit type and operating conditions | Use the exact approved fluid; no one interval fits every derivative. |
The badge and registration year tell only part of the story; production date, body code, engine and factory options complete it.
The story is mapped through English Wikipedia and its bibliography, then important dates and technical claims are checked against BMW material.
