X1 E84: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sports activity vehicle fits into the family.

E84 created BMW's first compact X model and carried over the longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel-drive foundations of the contemporary 1 and 3 Series. Unlike every later X1, it could therefore be ordered in rear-wheel-drive sDrive form as well as with xDrive all-wheel drive.

The 2009 European launch range mixed four- and six-cylinder petrol engines with four-cylinder diesels; North America joined only after the 2012 update and used a narrower petrol-led range. Outputs, transmissions and even model names must consequently be tied to market and production date rather than presented as one worldwide list.

The 2012 revision changed lamps, bumpers, cabin materials and the US-market offer, but did not alter the underlying E84 architecture. Production was shared between Leipzig and additional regional assembly operations, whose dates and local derivatives should be recorded separately from German production.
