X6 E71: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sports activity coupe fits into the family.

E71 introduced the production Sports Activity Coupé concept in 2008. It combined E70-era longitudinal drivetrain hardware with a four-seat, fastback five-door body and debuted Dynamic Performance Control, which could vary torque between the rear wheels.

Regular petrol and diesel ranges differed by region, while the limited ActiveHybrid X6 combined a V8 with a two-mode hybrid transmission. The E71 X6 M was the first full BMW M product in the X family and has its own engine, chassis and production identity.

A 2012 update changed lighting, trim and parts of the engine/equipment range. Standard X6, ActiveHybrid and X6 M data cannot be blended: their masses, luggage capacities, transmissions and service requirements are materially different.
