How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected touring fits into the family.
E60/E61 introduced the high-revving S85 V10, developed in the technological climate of BMW's Formula 1 programme but designed as a road engine. Most markets paired it with the seven-speed SMG III automated manual; North America later received a six-speed manual sedan with market-specific electronic behaviour.
The E60 sedan was joined by the E61 Touring in selected markets, never in North America. Body, mass, load space, final drive and production volumes differ, while the Touring retained SMG and therefore cannot inherit US manual-sedan data.
LCI electronics and lighting changes should be distinguished from mechanical editions. Regional special models such as 25th Anniversary packages generally sit on the existing drivetrain row unless factory evidence identifies different output or chassis hardware.
