i5 G60/G61: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected touring fits into the family.

The i5 is the battery-electric branch of the eighth-generation 5 Series and uses two production bodies: G60 sedan and G61 Touring. Both are assembled at Dingolfing on the same flexible line as combustion and plug-in-hybrid 5 Series, but the Touring has its own body dimensions, cargo volume and rear-suspension/load data.

Initial electric derivatives included rear-drive eDrive40 and dual-motor M60 xDrive; additional xDrive versions and market-specific outputs followed. The M60 is an M Performance electric model rather than a full M5, and its boost output must be distinguished from continuous or normal-mode output.

The i5 Touring launched in 2024 as the first all-electric 5 Series estate. Sedan and Touring may share battery technology and charging limits, but wheel, body, test cycle and software differences require separate range and consumption records.
