4 Series F32/F33/F36: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected coupe fits into the family.

F32/F33/F36 established the 4 Series as the separately named two-door and fastback branch of the contemporary 3 Series family. F32 is the fixed-roof coupe, F33 the convertible with a three-piece retractable hardtop, and F36 the five-door Gran Coupe liftback; their shared badge must not hide the different roof structures, doors and luggage packaging.

BMW presented the F32 coupe in June 2013, followed by the F33 convertible in October 2013 and the F36 Gran Coupe in early 2014. The initial range combined four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, rear-wheel drive and selected xDrive derivatives, but exact availability and transmission pairings changed by body, market and model year.

A coordinated lifecycle update arrived for the three regular bodies in 2017, bringing revised lighting, chassis tuning, equipment and an already-renamed engine range. F82/F83 M4 models share the broad industrial family but remain separate BMW M generations; they must not be folded into ordinary F32/F33 specifications or production totals.

How the generation evolved

The important launches, additions and updates did not always happen at the same time for every body or market.

  1. 4 Series coupe revealed

    BMW introduced F32 and made the 4 Series a distinct product line above the former 3 Series coupe position.

  2. F33 convertible

    The second body retained a three-piece retractable hardtop and received body-specific reinforcement and packaging.

  3. F36 Gran Coupe

    The longer-roof five-door liftback added rear doors and a large tailgate without becoming a sedan body.

  4. Lifecycle update

    Coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe were revised together, with dated changes to lighting, suspension and equipment.

  5. Staggered succession

    The three F-generation bodies did not leave production on one common date as G22, G23 and G26 arrived in sequence.

F36

4 Series F36 is a distinct F32/F33/F36 body branch. A four-door fastback combining a coupe-like roofline with easier rear access and a large tailgate or sedan-style luggage opening. Engines/drive: N20/B48 petrol I4, N47/B47 diesel I4, N55/B58 petrol I6, N57/B57 diesel I6.
