3 Series → E90/E91/E92/E93 → Touring
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected touring fits into the family.
The E9x generation moved the 3 Series into the era of direct injection, widespread turbocharging and increasingly complex electronics without abandoning its longitudinal, rear-drive foundation. It was also the last 3 Series family to place the regular Coupe and Cabriolet under the same model-line name.
Each body received its own code because the differences were more than cosmetic. E90 Sedan and E91 Touring formed the practical core, E92 Coupe adopted distinct proportions, and E93 used a folding metal roof. At the top, the M3's high-revving V8 made this a uniquely broad transition generation between analogue and modern BMWs.
The E9x codes describe four bodies rather than one interchangeable shell. E92 Coupe and E93 retractable-hardtop Cabriolet received their own exterior design and later facelift schedule, while E91 retained the Touring load body. Naturally aspirated N52/N53 cars, turbocharged N54/N55 versions, diesel generations and the S65 V8 M3 must be separated by market because fuel, injection and emissions hardware changed materially.

N52 and N53 powered 323i–330i while 335i used N54 and later N55. Parts identification follows engine code, injection type, production date and region.
Early M47/M57 engines transitioned to N47/N57. Documented timing-chain history is critical on N47; DPF, EGR and SCR configuration varies by market.
The S65 V8 M3 uses substantially revised body, chassis, brakes and transmissions and is maintained as a separate model branch.
Gearboxes, driven wheels and final-drive hardware changed with engine, market and production date.

Availability varied by body and market. Transfer-case health depends on matching tyre type, wear and rolling circumference across both axles.
