5 Series E39: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected touring fits into the family.

E39 refined the classic BMW executive-saloon formula with cleaner aerodynamics, a notably stiffer structure and extensive use of aluminium in the suspension. The result was a 5 Series that felt more polished and comfortable without abandoning the precise road manners on which the model's reputation rested.

Sedan and Touring formed the core family, but their rear structures and suspension details were not identical. Six-cylinder petrol and diesel cars covered most buyers, V8 models sat above them, and the sedan-only M5 gave the generation its performance landmark. The 2000 update is a major dividing line for engines, lighting and electronics.

Sedan and Touring share the E39 platform but not an identical rear structure or production calendar. Touring adds the two-piece tailgate and derivative-dependent self-levelling rear suspension, while the M5 was factory-built only as a sedan. The 2000 update is a major parts boundary because lighting, electronics and several engines changed while market introductions were staggered.
