How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected roadster fits into the family.
The Z1 was the first production project developed by BMW Technik and served as a rolling laboratory rather than a conventional derivative of the E30. It used a hot-dip-galvanised steel monocoque, removable thermoplastic exterior panels, a bonded composite floor and vertically retracting doors.
Its 2.5-litre M20 straight-six and five-speed manual were familiar BMW components, but the front-mid-engine installation, long wheelbase and newly designed Z-axle rear suspension gave the two-seat roadster its own chassis identity. E30/Z is an internal relationship label, not evidence that ordinary E30 body dimensions apply.
BMW Group Archive dates production from 1988 to 1991, while first customer deliveries and many registrations fall in 1989. The catalog separates production start from market year and records the sole regular powertrain rather than inventing model derivatives from colours or equipment combinations.
