How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.
E12 was the first car to carry the 5 Series name and the first clear expression of BMW's modern series hierarchy. Launched in 1972, the four-door saloon sat between the smaller sporting cars and the company's large luxury models, establishing a role the 5 Series has kept ever since.
The shape remained recognisably consistent, but the car evolved underneath it. Four-cylinder models opened the range, six-cylinder versions added the performance expected of a larger BMW, and the late M535i showed how far the saloon could be developed before the first M5 existed.
E12 used one factory four-door body, but its mechanical range evolved from four-cylinder carburettor cars to fuel-injected sixes and the M-developed M535i. North American emissions equipment, bumpers and model names differ materially from European cars, so a badge alone cannot identify engine output or body dimensions. Motorsport and tuner derivatives remain separate from BMW's series-production matrix.
